Stray Bodies
Abortion, in vitro fertilization, and euthanasia in Europe. Women fighting to reclaim control over their bodies.
A student from Malta travels to Italy to obtain an abortion, a procedure criminalized in her home country. An Italian lesbian journeys to Greece for an in vitro fertilization. A terminally ill Greek woman, seeking to die with dignity, must turn to Switzerland for assistance. The protagonists of "Stray Bodies" refuse to accept restrictions on their rights to their own bodies. Trapped by conflicting laws, they are forced to seek solutions at the fringes of legality—and grapple with the consequences of their decisions. Elina Psykou skillfully interweaves complementary stories, exposing how the discourse on women's rights is controlled by politics, religion, and the male perspective—not only in Poland.
