The Rise of Border Walls. Discussion after the Polish premiere of “Walls”

For many Poles, the border between Poland and Belarus has become the boundary of humanity. Several hundred kilometers away, the Polish border symbolizes the empathy and hospitality of our society. The Mediterranean Sea is called the border of Fortress Europe. A new Iron Curtain once again separates the West from the Russian world. The walls have returned - do they hold new meaning for us?

Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska - reporter for Fakty TVN, host of Fakty po Faktach on TVN 24. 

Kasia Smutniak - award-winning Polish-Italian film and television actress (including five Nastro D'argento awards from the Association of Italian Film Critics and an award for best actress at the Rome Film Festival). The world premiere of "Walls", her directorial debut, took place at TIFF in Toronto. 

Katarzyna Czarnota - researcher and project coordinator at the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, sociologist. In her research projects she uses the methodology of critical action research, focusing on showing ways of linking critical theory with social practice. In recent years, she has pursued interdisciplinary work on topics including forced migration, neo-racism, and art as a tool for change. Her research interests include the analysis of border regimes and mechanisms of exclusion towards migrants and migrant women. 

Mikołaj Grynberg - writer and photographer, psychologist by training. Author of the albums Dużo kobiet and Auschwitz. Co ja tu robię?. His photographs have been exhibited almost all over the world. He has published collections of interviews Ocaleni z XX wieku, Oskarżam Auschiwtz. Opowieści rodzinne and Księga wyjścia, as well as two volumes of short stories: Rejwach and Poufne. In 2021, he made his directorial debut with the documentary Dowód tożsamości. In July 2023, his latest book, Jezus umarł w Polsce was published. 

Łukasz Moll, PhD - philosopher and sociologist, assistant professor at the Institute of Sociology, University of Wrocław, editor of the scientific journal Praktyka Teoretyczna. His book Nomadyczna Europa (Foundation for Polish Science, Wydawnictwo UMK, 2021) seeks to answer the question about the condition of Europe in the face of the transformation of its borders
