Flowers of Ukraine
An anarchic war-time comedy: 67-year-old Natalia fights for her oasis amidst Kyiv’s housing blocks.
Natalia, 67, lives on a lush, flower-filled plot, a charming island surrounded by Kyiv’s towering apartment buildings. Sharing her days with her two ex-husbands, she raises goats and chickens, tends her garden, and wages a relentless battle against developers eager to replace her beloved home with yet another building. Excavators are a near-daily sight, but Natalia drives them off with the same fierce resolve each time. No amount of money can sway her—this is her home, not just a patch of land. Yet, just when it seems her fight against developers is the toughest challenge she’ll face, Russia launches a full-scale attack on Ukraine. Through warm, defiant humor, this story captures human resilience, the quiet courage of everyday life, and the indomitable spirit of Ukrainian women.
